Missus ORPO and I took off on Independence Day for Mammoth Lakes and a getaway from the heat of the desert. We went from our 2,375 ft. elevation to 7,880 feet at the Town of Mammoth Lakes to 8,898 feet at Lake Mamie. It was nice being in the Sierras.
Our first stop was in Independence, which is the county seat of Inyo County.
When we arrived in Mammoth Lakes at our Motel, the temperature was 78 degrees. It had been 102 in California City. We were quite happy, indeed! After checking in we grabbed some dinner and headed to Crowley Lake for the Fireworks Display.
Saturday was a lazy day and I spent some time at the pool, of which I am paying for as I write this. After a bite to eat, we headed up toward Mammoth Lake Basin. It was a chilly evening but the higher elevations were very nice.
The return home yesterday, included a stop at Manzanar. This was one of the “War Relocation Centers” that was hastily erected for the internment of the Issei and Nisei from the West Coast. This is a black eye for this country as a large percentage of those interred were Citizens of The United States.
