Barstow, Ludlow, Newberry Springs

Those places should key the reader’s mind to something near and dear to ORPO’s heart and that is trains. Yes, my friends, I took a jaunt to the East along the Mojave and Needles Subdivisons of the BNSF. The pictures are in order, sort of. I started by attempting to get some from the 58 which has become interesting as it is now four lanes from Bakersfield to Barstow… Took em long enough…….

Please bear with me as I learn how to use the new block system that WordPress has decided to switch to from the old platform……… Grrrrr

It was a good day all in all. The worst day chasing trains is better than the best day at work…….

I did manage to get a bite to eat at The World Famous Peggy Sue’s 50s Diner in Yermo and grab some neat things for Missus ORPO for our upcoming 37th Wedding Anniversary.

11:11:11

This day is known in the United States of America as Veterans Day. In my childhood it was called Armistice Day by the wizzened, white haired old men in the little towns that I grew up in in Montana. When I lived on the Prairies of Southern Alberta in Canada, it was Remembrance Day. On our first Remembrance Day north of the 49th parallel, we watched the Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau lay a wreath at the Tomb of The Unkown at the Cenotaph in the Capital of the Dominion, Ottawa.  The current PM, Justin Trudeau seems to be a no show for this and it pains me. That is all I will say about that “gentleman.” At the precise moment of 11 minutes after 11 Eastern Time, the entire country of Canada came to a stop….. Let that sink in. Bill Paisley would understand being a former resident of the Maritimes.

The Poem, Flander’s Fields has meaning for me in that a Great Grandfather of mine came to the United States from Ypres in Flanders, now the present day Belgium. I do not consider that blood to be Belgian but Flemish to this very day.

Whatever your background and political persuasion, always remember….

There are those of us who did our time in Forces, whether it was a four year hitch or a twenty year plus career, we give you our gratitude this day……

For those who are no longer with us is this.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”

Day trip to Baker

We decided to run up the 15 to Baker. One of our favorite little places is there, that being Alien Fresh Jerky. I got a T shirt that after it is laundered will be posted.

I did take the Trusty Nikon and I did get a few pictures taken. It was an aim and fire sort of thing.

Monday run to Lancaster…..

Pictures ensued…..

I had to take a release form to my VA doc from my dentist. It seems he is worried about the mixing of medications used for doing the dental work that I need and the ones the VA has me on. Another fun process………..argh……… The dentist also thinks it is a good idea to wait until the urinary issues to be resolved before I have teeth pulled and some oral surgery……

I have to admit that this stuff is getting old….. If it ain’t one thing, its another.

Seeing as the Trusty Nikon was in the car, I decided to grab a few pics on the way home. The H-60 was a pleasant surprise. It was shooting touch and goes at Mojave and I got lucky enough to get a few shots of it. The day is windy and we are under a wind advisory beginning at 1600 PDT…. The wind blows in the desert….. Big surprise isn’t it!

So here they all are!

Click them to enlarge and please enjoy!

New Coffee Machine

Mrs. ORPO bought a Kuerig 2.0 sometime back and I was introduced to using one on our last trip to the Central Coast. The billeting at Camp San Luis Obispo has replaced the traditional drip coffee makers with Kuerigs. I admit that they make a “damn fine cup of coffee.” OK, I love that line from the TV show, “Twin Peaks.”

China Lake Air Show

It was a small show. I was impressed by the way it was run though. The Blue Angels were there for their first show on the road. I have seen them so many times that I spend my time wandering through the static displays.

The Brits and Dutch had their Test F-35s under the canopies on the line.

BTW, I have disabled person plates on my vehicles and I parked about six spaces from the entry control point for ADA and VIP folks.

Eyes of a Stranger

Queensryche………………………

Eyes of a Stranger………………sometimes when I look in the mirror, I don’t know the man looking back at me……………………

All alone now
Except for the memories
Of what we had and what we knew
Every time I try to leave it behind me
I see something that reminds me of you
Every night the dreams return to haunt me
Your rosary wrapped around your throat
I lie awake and sweat, afraid to fall asleep
I see your face looking back at me, looking back at me
And I raise my head and stare
Into the eyes of a stranger
I’ve always known that the mirror never lies
People always turn away
From the eyes of a stranger
Afraid to know what
Lies behind the stare
Is this all that’s left
Of my life before me
Straight jacket memories, sedative highs
No happy ending like they’ve always promised
There’s got to be something left for me
And I raise my head and stare
Into the eyes of a stranger
I’ve always known that the mirror never lies
People always turn away
From the eyes of a stranger
Afraid to know what
Lies behind the stare (Lies behind my stare)
How many times must I live this tragedy
How many more lies will they tell me
All I want is the same as everyone
Why am I here, and for how long
And I raise my head and stare
Into the eyes of a stranger
I’ve always known that the mirror never lies
People always turn away
From the eyes of a stranger
Afraid to know what
Lies behind the stare

Germanicus

During the height of the Roman Empire, Germanicus was universally recognized by soldiers, citizens and politicians alike to be the single most ferocious, merciless yet honorable warrior ever to be produced by Rome. Despite being born into the elite, Germanicus spent most of his life knee-deep in dead enemies on the battlefield, writing poetry about astrology and most notably - extracting brutal revenge on Germans.

You see, after hearing about the Romans suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of the German Tribal Chief Arminius, Germanicus spent several years seething in quiet rage and plotting retribution. He had three goals in mind - First, to find the site where they suffered defeat and bury the bodies of fallen Romans. Second, to recover the captured Eagles the Germanic Tribes took and bring them back to Rome. Lastly, to turn into a limb-severing machine and take the lives of as many enemies as possible. He succeeded in prolific fashion in all endeavors and returned home a paragon of loyalty, the ultimate symbol of an honorable warrior, and the one guy you shouldn't piss off.

Silent Lucidity

I like Queensryche……………………

Hush now don’t cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
You’re lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is, another chance
Wide awake you face the day
Your dream is over
Or has it just begun?
